EU ambassador, Gonzato to new magistrates: Your decisions will shape citizens’ trust in justice

TIRANA, June 29 – European Union Ambassador to Albania Silvio Gonzato called on newly graduated magistrates to carry out their duties with integrity, honesty, courage and humility. He said every decision they take will directly affect citizens’ lives and trust in the justice system.

Meanwhile, Gonzato spoke at the National Conference on Interaction between Justice and Media during the graduation ceremony of new magistrates. He reaffirmed EU support for the School of Magistrates and for justice reform in Albania.

In addition, he said his presence reflected strong EU backing for the institution. He described the ceremony as both a moment of celebration and a key transition in professional life.

He stressed that judges and prosecutors will hold high-responsibility positions. He also said they will provide an essential public service.

At the same time, Gonzato said each decision shapes public trust in justice. He added that this trust forms a core part of the social contract.

He further said judicial work requires integrity, honesty, courage and humility. He warned that first judgments may sometimes be wrong and urged openness to correction.

In addition, he said European standards depend not only on laws but also on daily judicial practice. He stressed that magistrates ensure laws are properly applied.

Gonzato urged magistrates to remain open-minded and to continue learning. He said institutional change depends on cultural and mental transformation, not only legal reforms. He added that the EU will continue supporting justice institutions in Albania.
