Ajden Nora brings monophonic singing to life as Gjirokastër’s tradition passes through generations

Gjirokastër continues to inspire young generations with its distinctive houses, architecture and rich cultural heritage.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Blendi Gonxhja shared a video featuring young artist Ajden Nora. He highlighted how young people are keeping Albania’s cultural heritage alive through music and art.

“When tradition finds the voice of a new generation,” Gonxhja said. “Gjirokastër is not only stone, history and architecture. It is also voice, song and a tradition passed from generation to generation.”

Nora performs monophonic singing inside the Zekate House, one of Gjirokastër’s most impressive historic residences.

His performance highlights one of Albania’s distinctive musical traditions.

“Throughout our tradition, we have sung about everything that touches human life and the human soul: flowers, beauty, girls, love, joy, pain, life and birth,” Gonxhja said.

This time, the song celebrates Gjirokastër. It pays tribute to the city’s stone houses, unique architecture and enduring beauty. Gonxhja said the performance also shows how traditions remain alive when younger generations embrace them.

“A new generation does not see tradition only as the past. It takes it into its own voice and makes it part of the future,” he said.

Monophonic singing uses a single vocal line. In traditional performance, singers can take the roles of the “caller” and “responder.” They combine these parts to recreate the wider sound of the group.

Through Nora’s performance, Gjirokastër’s heritage meets a new generation, keeping its musical traditions alive in a contemporary setting.
