Hoxha: Glorifying War Criminals Goes Against European Values

Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha condemned tributes to Ratko Mladic in Serbia today.

“Albania condemns the glorification of Ratko Mladic, a convicted war criminal who died while serving a life sentence for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes,” Hoxha wrote in a post on X.

Hoxha said Albania stands with the European Union, its leaders and all those who have rightly condemned the way Serbia honored Mladic.

“Our position has remained clear and consistent. Glorifying convicted war criminals, denying genocide and promoting historical revisionism contradict the values on which the European project stands. They also undermine reconciliation, cooperation and good-neighborly relations, which remain essential for a shared future in the Western Balkans,” Hoxha stressed.

Moreover, the minister said such acts cause damage that goes beyond reopening the wounds of the past.

“They insult victims and survivors and erode trust between communities and people,” Hoxha added.

Hoxha stressed that Albania strongly believes genuine reconciliation can only grow from truth, accountability and respect for victims and survivors. He also called for a shared commitment to ensure that the crimes of the past never happen again.

“Our region has a future to build together. That future must be European. It must rest on peace, reconciliation, cooperation, mutual respect and an unwavering commitment to remembering those who suffered the horrors of war,” Hoxha said.
