Tirana Mosaic/ Ancient history brought to life through 3D and Gigapixel technology

The Tirana Mosaic has become one of the capital’s most important tourist attractions. It preserves valuable traces of Albania’s ancient history. After a full restoration and reconstruction, the site now attracts more local and foreign visitors.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja said the mosaic now connects cultural heritage with the present. He highlighted technology’s role in preserving and interpreting history. He also stressed its role in creating a more engaging experience for visitors.

“3D reconstruction, interactive installations and Gigapixel technology set a new standard for documenting and presenting Albania’s cultural heritage,” Gonxhja said.

The Tirana Mosaic holds Category I Cultural Monument status. It forms part of a Roman villa that dates back to the 3rd century AD. Workers discovered the remains in 1972. They found them while building a residential block in the Partizani neighborhood. The latest restoration project ended last year. The project also created a platform to display mosaics from antiquity and late antiquity.

Authorities normally keep these mosaics covered. This protects them from weather and other environmental factors. The new platform will also display mosaics from some of Albania’s most important archaeological sites. These include Apollonia, Butrint, Byllis, Durrës and Elbasan.

The project combines conservation with modern technology. It gives visitors a new way to explore Albania’s ancient heritage. At the same time, it helps protect these archaeological treasures for future generations.
