TIRANA, June 10 – Academician Luan Omari, one of the founders of the Academy of Sciences of Albania, celebrated his 101st birthday on Tuesday.

Omari was born on June 10, 1925, in Gjirokastër. He completed his early education in Bari and graduated from the Italian high school in Tirana. Later, he studied law in Belgrade and Sofia, earning a degree in legal sciences.

He became the first Albanian academician to reach the age of 100. At the same time, he remains the last surviving founder of the Academy of Sciences of Albania since its establishment in 1972.

Throughout his career, Omari played a key role in higher education and academic institutions in Albania. He served as a lecturer in public law, dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Tirana for nearly two decades, professor of constitutional law, scientific secretary, and later vice president of the Academy of Sciences.

In addition, he represented Albania in the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.

Omari authored dozens of studies and monographs on constitutional law and Albania’s legal system. He also contributed to drafting the Constitution of the Republic of Albania after the 1990s and helped educate generations of Albanian legal professionals and academics.

The Academy of Sciences awarded him its Academic Career Prize in 2016. Meanwhile, the President of Albania awarded him the “George Kastrioti Skanderbeg” Decoration in 2020 for his contribution to law and academic institutions.
