TIRANA, June 11 – The stone city of Gjirokastër remains one of Albania’s most sought-after destinations. The city also forms part of the country’s year-round tourism offer.
Domestic and international visitors explore Gjirokastër for its history and cultural heritage. The destination also offers attractions suited to different age groups and interests.
Prime Minister Edi Rama shared photos from Gjirokastër on social media. He described the scene as “a typical day,” where hundreds of tourists visit the city’s main sites. Visitors move between the historic bazaar, museums and local restaurants and bars that serve traditional cuisine.
Gjirokastër holds strong historical, architectural and cultural value. The city ranks among the first sites in Albania included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Gjirokastër Castle stands as the city’s main landmark. The fortress sits on a hill above the Drino valley. It also connects visually with Mount Gjere.
Several museums operate in the city throughout the year. These include the Cold War Museum, the Weapons Museum, the Ethnographic Museum and the Kadare Museum. The latter links to the literary legacy of Ismail Kadare and his novel Chronicle in Stone. Each site presents aspects of local history, tradition and notable figures from Gjirokastër.
The castle rises at around 370 metres above sea level. It also offers a wide panoramic view over the city and surrounding areas.
