Central bank governor Sejko assures public deposits are safe

Bank of Albania Governor Gent Sejko has assured the public that deposits in the country’s banking system remain safe. He also pledged that the central bank would continue operating professionally and responsibly to meet the needs of citizens and the economy.

Sejko spoke at a meeting in Tirana between Prime Minister Edi Rama and banking-sector executives. Discussions focused on the financial system’s continued operation following the protests of recent days. Sejko described the banking system as a key pillar of the Albanian economy and stressed the importance of maintaining professional services.

He thanked commercial banks for keeping their branches open despite the situation in the capital. He said the Bank of Albania had prioritised the continued operation of the payment system, cash circulation and other financial activities.

Sejko stressed that recent tensions posed no threat to citizens’ deposits. He said Albanian banks were well-capitalised and had sufficient liquidity. He added that uninterrupted banking services remained essential to citizens, businesses and the wider economy.
