TIRANA, May 9 – Prime Minister Edi Rama marked Europe Day during the opening of Europe Week, describing 9 May as a symbol of European courage and cooperation.
Speaking at the event, Rama said the European Union represents a space where different cultures live and cooperate in peace and equality. He stressed that freedom and human dignity remain non-negotiable European values.
At the same time, Rama warned that growing insecurity and isolationist tendencies threaten optimism across Europe. According to him, the continent’s security depends on openness, dialogue, and respect for fundamental values rather than isolation behind “walls”.
Referring to Albania’s European path, Rama described Europe as a permanent national objective for Albanians. He said the country understands the consequences of isolation better than many others because of its past experience under a closed regime.
Meanwhile, the prime minister highlighted Albania’s role in regional stability and security. He also pointed to progress in judicial reform, describing it as an unprecedented process in the region and a result of Albania’s partnership with the European Union.
According to Rama, the reform would not have been possible without the European vision and European Union support. He said the bloc helped Albania build stronger and more credible institutions through expertise and institutional cooperation.
Furthermore, Rama stressed that the rule of law cannot be negotiated. He added that Albania’s confidence in the accession process comes from its close cooperation with the European Union and from the guarantees offered by the European legal framework.
Europe Week 2026 will run from 9 to 22 May under the motto “Open Space”. The programme includes more than 55 cultural activities across Albania, featuring theatre, exhibitions, dance, music, interdisciplinary events, and public discussions.
