The exhibition “Gjon Mili: Retrospective” opens at the National Museum of Photography Marubi National Museum of Photography and brings the work of photographer Gjon Mili back to Albania.
The museum presents original works curated by Howard Greenberg. It showcases Mili as a pioneer of modern photography.
First, the exhibition displays portraits of major 20th-century artists. It features Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, and Count Basie.
In addition, Mili captures these musicians in powerful moments. He shows music, rhythm, and emotion through light and movement.
Moreover, the exhibition includes striking images of Duke Ellington at the piano. It also shows Charlie Parker in minimal, focused compositions. At the same time, it presents Billie Holiday in emotionally intense portraits.
Furthermore, the retrospective highlights Mili’s experiments with stroboscopic light. He uses multiple exposures to capture motion. He turns movement into visible form.
As a result, he shows what the human eye cannot normally see. He reveals motion, rhythm, and light trails in space. In addition, the exhibition includes rare photos of Pablo Picasso in France. It shows the artist in spontaneous and informal moments.
It also presents portraits of Alfred Hitchcock and early images of Tina Turner. Mili captures them before global fame reshapes their image. Born in Korçë in 1904, Mili moves to the United States at a young age. He builds a career at Life magazine and becomes a leading innovator in photography.
Finally, the exhibition restores his legacy in Albania. It reconnects the public with one of the country’s most influential artists in global visual culture.
