TIRANA, April 28 – Authorities presented the “Green Vjosa” project in Përmet as a new step to protect biodiversity along the Vjosa River, described as Europe’s last wild river. The initiative focuses on environmental protection and sustainable development in areas along the river.
Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj and Germany’s Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider presented the project. They said it aims to strengthen biodiversity protection and support sustainable development along the Vjosa.
During the event, the delegation visited the Vjosa River National Park, one of Albania’s key natural ecosystems. The park holds high biodiversity values and plays an important role in maintaining environmental balance in the region.
The “Green Vjosa” project for 2026–2029 aims to reinforce the river’s protected status. It also promotes sustainable economic and environmental development for local communities.
Jaupaj stressed cooperation with international partners. He expressed appreciation for Germany’s continued support in environmental protection and biodiversity in Albania.
The project will strengthen management capacities in protected areas through training and exchange of experience. It will also support local businesses and nature-based services to generate income and jobs. In addition, it will promote the Vjosa as a key destination for sustainable tourism.
The Vjosa National Park is Albania’s newest national park. It is part of an application for UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status.
