The Hague will deliver its verdict on September 16 in the trial of former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi. Across Kosova, residents are following the expected verdict with differing levels of interest. In Buroja, Thaçi’s birthplace, residents hope the court will acquit the four defendants. Former KLA members and residents in Drenica share that expectation. In Llapashtica, residents recall the wartime period differently from the allegations presented during the trial. Meanwhile, some residents in Suhareka also expect an acquittal. Members of the Serb community have largely avoided public comment, citing concerns about tensions and reactions.
The case also draws less attention among some younger people in Prishtina. Some say they have followed the proceedings only minimally. Others want to learn more about the trial and the war. At the same time, the case remains important for families seeking answers about unresolved wartime cases. One member of Kosova’s Serb community said the court had not helped clarify the fate of her missing father. The four defendants remain in detention in The Hague, where the trial has lasted more than two years.
