NATO Secretary General warns of destabilisation attempts in Western Balkans

TIRANA, May 13 – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that some actors are attempting to destabilise the Western Balkans and pull the region backwards. During a visit to Montenegro, he said the alliance remains committed to ensuring past conflicts remain in history.

Turning to security concerns, Rutte said NATO will identify and counter any malicious activity on alliance territory. He stressed that the Western Balkans continue to hold strategic importance for Euro-Atlantic security.

In addition, he said Russia continues its war against Ukraine, while China is becoming increasingly assertive in its approach. He also described the southern neighbourhood as unstable.

Meanwhile, Rutte welcomed Montenegro’s defence spending of more than 2% of gross domestic product. He described the country as a valuable NATO ally and noted that Montenegro has been part of the alliance for nine years.
