“What truly makes a difference is the dream,” Prime Minister Edi Rama said during a discussion with professors from the World Economic Forum, linking Albania’s transformation and that of the region to the aspiration for European Union membership.
Responding to a Mongolian professor’s question about Albania’s democratic transformation and transition challenges, Rama said the country had gone through a long period of change. He stressed that the European dream had provided an important direction.
“I believe that what truly makes a difference is the dream,” Rama said. He referred to Afghanistan and Iraq as examples where people received promises of a better future, but those promises did not materialize.
Meanwhile, Rama stressed that Albania had a different aspiration: membership in the European Union. He said this shared goal had helped guide the country toward development and progress.
According to Rama, countries across the region have faced difficult transitions, including civil, ethnic and religious conflicts. Today, however, they are following a development path focused on European integration.
Rama also argued that the European Union has played a key role in this process. Without the EU as a shared aspiration, he said, the situation in the region could have been much worse.
