During an interview with journalist Maria Tadeo at the Euronews Enlargement Summit in Brussels, Prime Minister Edi Rama commented on the Western Balkans’ path toward the European Union and Serbia’s regional role.
He emphasized that although Serbia’s EU integration is important for regional stability, Belgrade must demonstrate concrete progress, meet the European Union’s non-negotiable conditions, and recognize Kosovo.
“What I know is that the winner in Belgrade does not show openness toward me and Albanians on the issue that matters, which is the recognition of Kosovo. This means that the tune in Belgrade will not change.
We are part of a region that is not yet fully integrated into the EU, and we are the ones who receive lectures rather than give them. However, Serbia is an important piece of the Western Balkans puzzle.
I have advocated for not allowing Serbia to move in the wrong direction and abandon the European project. On the other hand, we know how things work.
When it comes to certain issues, Serbia has demonstrated hesitation regarding Kosovo, as well as in its position toward Russia and sanctions.
We need Serbia to stand with us, to be part of our neighborhood, and to become a full member of the EU. However, it must deliver results and earn that membership by fulfilling the EU’s non-negotiable requirements,” Rama said.
