Prime Minister Edi Rama and Interior Minister Ervin Demo held a joint press conference this Saturday regarding the protests in the capital.
Rama said that insisting on continuing protests while refusing dialogue was pointless, stressing that protesters were afraid to engage in talks for fear of being labelled traitors.
“When we tell them that we are ready for dialogue, continuing to insist on protesting makes no sense. The freedom to protest is a right, while violence is a crime.
That is why we are here to address the issues we consider important. We are taking measures against those who engage in violence, against anarchy, and to maintain public order.
In terms of security and guaranteeing rights, in cooperation with our partners and building on the steps we have already taken, we will very soon present concrete proposals and measures.
Anyone who says that I have been indifferent to those shouting outside my window until now should know that, in fact, for four months I have listened more than anyone else, more than they have listened to one another. They have insulted and threatened without saying anything concrete, while continuously refusing to sit down and talk.
I have also communicated with them. I have invited them, but they have been characterized by fear of one another, afraid of being labelled traitors. They are a group of antifascists indoctrinated by a professor who promotes an ideology of violence, and they have the ability and capacity to subject others to psychological intimidation,” Rama said.
