Spahiu: Reforms Remain Key Priority for EU Integration

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Klodiana Spahiu said that reforms remain a top priority for Albania’s European Union integration process.

She made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the French Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, led by Jean-François Rapin.

First, both sides highlighted the strong relations between Albania and France. They also referred to the 2017 Strategic Partnership Declaration between the two countries.

Spahiu stressed that parliamentary cooperation plays an important role. It helps exchange views on bilateral relations, regional developments in the Western Balkans, and Albania’s EU integration agenda. In addition, she emphasized the importance of strengthening multilateral cooperation in international organizations.

She also underlined that Albania’s path toward EU membership reflects a long-term commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. At the same time, she noted strong public support for integration, which she described as a national consensus.

The French delegation praised Albania’s reforms. It also recognized the significant progress made, including the opening of all negotiation clusters within one year.

Spahiu further stated that the reform agenda focuses on strengthening the rule of law. It also prioritizes fighting corruption, modernizing public administration, and improving legal certainty in investments and property rights.

Moreover, both sides highlighted growing economic cooperation. They pointed to several tourism projects, including around 10 hotel investments by major French brands operating in Albania.

They also welcomed cultural cooperation initiatives. These include a partnership with the Cannes film school and plans to reopen the French Scientific Lyceum in Korçë, with a focus on technology and innovation. Finally, both sides acknowledged the strong political ties between Albania and France.
