Stone-Brewed Coffee, an Experience Attracting Foreign Tourists in Gjirokastër

The rich values of tradition and cultural heritage in Gjirokastër are attracting a growing number of tourists this spring season. Alongside its cultural monuments, the “stone city” also presents visitors with characteristic rituals passed down through generations. The preparation of traditional coffee on stone is one of the favorite stops for foreign tourists visiting the museum area. They become familiar with the elements of this unique ritual while enjoying coffee prepared in a distinctive way.

“Tourists prefer to see traditional things, to experience Albania’s cultural heritage, and the way coffee is prepared according to old Albanian customs using a pipe and open fire. German tourists in particular greatly appreciate Albania’s valuable cultural heritage—not only the coffee, but also traditional clothing and iso-polyphony, in general,” said tour guide Bearet Bajraktari.

“I come from Germany—this is my first trip to Albania. It is a very pleasant country, with hospitable people and beautiful landscapes. The traditions and characteristic cuisine are especially unique. When I return, I will recommend to my friends that they visit Albania,” said one tourist.

“We followed the ritual of preparing coffee in the traditional way—it was truly very interesting. I think your traditions are very special, and it would be great for foreign tourists to visit Albania,” said another tourist.

Throughout this year, Gjirokastër has welcomed around 30,000 domestic and foreign tourists. The tourism sector is now among the most profitable for the local economy and is creating opportunities for new jobs.
