The European Parliament approved the Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET) report on North Macedonia, prepared by permanent rapporteur Thomas Waitz.
The report assessed the findings of the European Commission. It highlighted the lack of progress in judicial reforms and anti-corruption efforts. In addition, it urged the country to implement constitutional amendments to unblock its path toward EU membership.
Furthermore, the European Parliament approved an amendment addressing the use of the Albanian language in North Macedonia’s state jurisprudence examinations. It called on the authorities to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
The adopted document also calls for the full implementation of the Ohrid Framework Agreement, both in law and in practice. Consequently, it aims to ensure equal use of the Albanian language in institutional and academic processes.
Moreover, the European Parliament stressed that student protests should not be portrayed as destabilizing or politically motivated. Therefore, it urged North Macedonian authorities to adopt a more careful and balanced approach when addressing them.
Finally, the amendment states that local institutions should work toward a swift resolution of the issue. At the same time, they should act in line with European standards on language rights and institutional equality.
