Upper Grabova: The Hidden “Twin” of Voskopoja in Mount Valamara

Grabova e Sipërme sits hidden in the highlands between Gramsh and Korçë, on the slopes of Mount Valamara.

First, the village stands at about 1,250 meters above sea level and preserves a striking natural landscape shaped by mountain waters and deep valleys.

Then, its stone houses and traditional architecture reflect a long history dating back to the 10th century, when it functioned as an important trade center.

Meanwhile, old stone roads and bridge remains still trace the routes that once connected it to Voskopoja and the wider Egnatia network.

In addition, Grabova e Sipërme is known as a historic Aromanian settlement where language and cultural traditions are still preserved.

However, the village has experienced major population decline over centuries due to migration waves and historical insecurity.

Today, only a small number of families remain, although many descendants return seasonally to restore homes or care for livestock.

Moreover, the area still holds valuable religious heritage, including surviving churches and ruins of many others that once served a much larger community.

For example, the Church of St. Nicholas remains active and preserves important post-Byzantine frescoes and wooden carvings.

Finally, despite isolation and difficult road access, Grabova e Sipërme continues to attract visitors for hiking, heritage tourism, and its unique mountain atmosphere.
