Tourism in Gjirokastër shows positive trend but service improvements needed

TIRANA, April 7 – Tourism in Gjirokastër is showing strong growth this season, with increased interest from domestic and international visitors.

Tour operators report satisfactory bookings and expect visitor numbers to rise further in the summer months. Despite this growth, several challenges persist that require urgent attention. One major concern remains the lack of clear tourist signage, which often makes navigation difficult for visitors.

Vasil Garo, a local tour operator, told RTSH that communities and local units are trying to respond. “Problems remain with waste management. Tourists need better information on signage, guidance for adventure trails, hiking path markings, and directions at archaeological sites,” he said.

Operators stress that infrastructure improvements and investment in human resources are essential to ensure a higher-quality visitor experience. “Business leaders recognize these issues and are working to resolve them through digitalization, staff training, community care, and waste management,” they added.

Despite these challenges, expectations for the tourist season remain positive. Operators believe that with proper interventions and inter-institutional cooperation, Gjirokastër can further enhance the quality and sustainability of its tourism in the coming years.
