As part of the “Smart City” project, 20 schools in Tirana will be equipped with around 380 smart cameras, installed both inside and outside school premises. The number of cameras per school will range from 11 to 31, depending on the number of students.
The system will monitor school environments in real time and has been designed by Albania’s Ministry of Interior, using artificial intelligence.
Faik Basha, a security expert, explains:
“This is the most advanced system for monitoring and protection against hacking. Students’ privacy is not compromised, as the cameras are placed in areas where they already exist, but with a significantly higher capacity to ensure their safety. The system also helps prevent risks such as drug use or the entry of suspicious individuals into schools.”
The selected schools include “Fan Noli”, “Kongresi i Manastirit”, “Ramazan Jarani”, “Ahmet Gashi”, “Gjon Buzuku”, “Jeronim De Rada”, “Avni Rustemi”, as well as high schools “Petro Nini Luarasi”, “Qemal Stafa”, “Partizani”, “Economic Technical School”, and “Aleks Buda”.
Gentjan Serjani, a legal expert, emphasizes:
“The implementation of such systems requires consultation with parents and a clear legal framework to protect children’s privacy.”
The project also includes detectors and intelligent systems, the establishment of monitoring rooms, and staff training.
