27 years since the battle of Koshare, the day that broke the border between Kosova and Albania

TIRANA, April 9 – Today marks 27 years since the Battle of Koshare, a key confrontation that broke the border between Kosova and Albania.

The battle began on April 9, 1999, during Operation “Shigjeta” (The Arrow). It involved fierce clashes with Serbian forces and stands among the bloodiest and most heroic episodes of the Kosova Liberation Army (KLA).

The victory boosted morale and opened supply routes for weapons and logistical support to multiple conflict zones inside Kosova. Earlier diplomatic efforts to secure a Serbian withdrawal had failed. Meanwhile, NATO targeted Serbian military positions after the failure of Rambouillet talks.

Strategically, the battle secured the border and created a stable rear line for logistics, medical aid, and operations. It also carried legal significance, preventing Serbian control over a territory separating Kosova from Albania.

The triumph strengthened local trust in the KLA and inspired volunteers to join the fight. Fighters from across Kosova, united in Brigade 138 under Commander Agim Ramadani, broke through the heavily fortified border. This secured a vital link for supplies and reinforcements.

The battle of Koshare remains a pivotal chapter in national history. It is commemorated as such among Albanians.
