Former President Ilir Meta Sends Letter to Albanian Helsinki Committee: “My Fundamental Rights Are Being Violated”

The leader of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, has addressed a public letter to the Albanian Helsinki Committee, raising allegations of violations of his fundamental rights during his pre-trial detention at the “Jordan Misja” penitentiary.

In his lengthy letter, Meta claims that he is being denied basic rights, ranging from restrictions on outdoor time to a lack of transparency regarding disciplinary decisions.

He describes the situation as political persecution and calls for equal treatment with other detainees, as well as full respect for the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.

Meta further stated that he was particularly concerned by claims made to the Committee that he was receiving outdoor time twice a day like other detainees. He disputes this, asserting that since July 2, 2025, he has been allowed outdoor time only once per day, unlike other inmates.

He also raised concerns over the lack of official documentation explaining the disciplinary measures taken against him, stating that despite formal requests through his lawyer, no official decision has been provided.

Meta questioned why he is being denied the right to appeal and criticized what he described as attempts by prison authorities to influence what he can say publicly, particularly regarding his legal case.

He argued that while others are allowed to make public claims about his case, he is being restricted from defending himself, calling this a violation of his rights in a democratic society.
