Gonxhja: Legacy of lahuta master Jonuz Delaj remains immortal

Renowned lahuta player from Malësia e Madhe, Jonuz Delaj, passed away. He left a rare legacy in preserving the Epic of the Kreshniks and the Albanian lahuta tradition.

Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja said Albania lost more than a musician. He said the country lost a living era of historical memory and oral tradition.

He described Delaj as the “magician of the lahuta.” He said Delaj remained one of the most authentic performers of epic songs passed down through generations.

Gonxhja said Delaj carried the lahuta as part of his identity. He turned it into a testimony of Albanian history and culture. He preserved it through voice, memory, and spiritual strength.

The minister noted that this heritage now holds greater meaning. The Albanian lahuta has UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. He said figures like Delaj helped preserve it in its purest form.

Gonxhja said institutions remain committed to protecting and promoting this cultural wealth. He added that the Epic of the Kreshniks and the lahuta tradition will continue to live in national memory and identity.
