The Greek government has disclosed part of the conversation between Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during their meeting held on Wednesday in Athens.
In his remarks, Mitsotakis reiterated Athens’ official support for Albania’s path toward the EU and described the meeting as an opportunity to resolve outstanding issues between the two countries.
“It is always a pleasure to welcome you to Athens, dear Edi, on the occasion of your participation in the Delphi Economic Forum. It is always good to have the opportunity to assess the significant progress we have made in our bilateral relations and our continued support on the difficult path you have undertaken toward the European Union.
However, I believe we still have an important opportunity to resolve outstanding issues related to our bilateral relations and to establish true friendship between our two peoples.
Therefore, it is a great opportunity to welcome you again to Athens, and I know that you truly enjoy coming here,” Mitsotakis said.
Rama, for his part, praised Greece’s support and stressed the importance of finalizing unresolved issues between the two countries in a strategic partnership document.
“Thank you very much. And, to tell you the truth, I feel relieved that what had to be left in the past has remained in the past, because this gives me the opportunity to come more often to your beautiful country, which I love.
At the same time, I would like to sincerely thank you for your support. We greatly appreciate it. And yes, we are very eager to continue and complete what we have agreed on together — a bold strategic partnership document where all issues are addressed and there are no more unresolved matters between us — as we aim to join the European Union and make this region much more significant at this level as well.”
During the conversation, there were also light jokes about Prime Minister Rama’s attire.
“Once again, thank you very much, Prime Minister. It is an honor to be here, and I apologize for not dressing as formally as you, because I did not expect such a reception. Therefore, I hope the Greek media will not perceive it differently, other than as a lack of proper information from my protocol,” Rama said during the meeting.
“We accept that you are always very innovative in the way you dress, and we like that,” Mitsotakis replied.
In an interview with the Greek media outlet Kathimerini two days earlier, Rama spoke at length about Greek-Albanian relations, economic developments in Albania, the property issue in Himara, as well as recent debates surrounding his statements on the international stage.
