Bedri Hamza has resigned as leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK). He has also informed the party’s leadership of his decision.
During a press conference, Hamza said that people must know when it is their responsibility to take on a leadership role and when it is time to step down. He said his decision paves the way for a new internal election process within the party.
Hamza stated that he had taken on the responsibility of leading the PDK out of a sense of duty to the party, rather than personal political ambitions.
He also emphasized that, throughout his leadership, he had focused on preserving the party’s unity.
“I am not leaving the PDK. I am stepping down only from the position of party leader, but I am not abandoning my belief in our political values. For as long as I live, I will remain a loyal voter of the Democratic Party of Kosovo and a member of this great political family,” he said.
Hamza said there had been expectations that, after September 16, he would hand the party leadership back to the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), who are in The Hague.
However, Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli and Rexhep Selimi were sentenced to a combined 81 years in prison on war crimes charges.
Regarding the proceedings, Hamza added that efforts to seek justice would continue.
