Kosovo Parliament approves price cap bill, opposition objects

Lawmakers in Kosovo have officially approved a draft law on price caps on Thursday, despite opposition criticism, which accused the government of seeking to intervene in the free market.

The draft law – officially known as the Law on Temporary Measures for Basic Products in Special Cases of Market Destabilization – was adopted with 63 votes in favor, none against, and no abstentions.

For it to enter into force, it must be signed by the country’s president, in this case the acting president, Albulena Haxhiu.

The government rejected the opposition’s criticism, arguing that the law aims to introduce temporary and proportionate measures for essential products in extraordinary cases of market disruption, in order to protect citizens from unreasonable and sudden increases in the prices of basic goods.
