Metsola praises Albania as leading country in EU accession process

TIRANA, April 22 – European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has described Albania as one of the most advanced countries in the European Union enlargement process, highlighting the pace of reforms and progress in accession negotiations, eudebates.tv reported.

Speaking during a debate on EU enlargement, Metsola placed Albania and Montenegro among the frontrunners in the accession process. She also pointed to delays within the European Union itself, saying institutional decision-making has slowed progress for candidate countries.

Her intervention came in the broader context of discussions on EU enlargement policy and the credibility of the accession process. Metsola said candidate countries in the Western Balkans often link domestic political expectations to the prospect of EU membership, increasing pressure for visible progress from Brussels.

She also raised concerns about unanimity rules in EU decision-making, particularly in the opening and closing of negotiation chapters. Metsola argued that enlargement is ultimately a matter of political will, citing prolonged processes such as the 11-year delay before Romania and Bulgaria joined the Schengen area.
