TIRANA, August 17 – Albania’s State Police will establish a new unit focused specifically on environmental crimes. Interior Minister Besfort Lamallari announced the move during a meeting with State Police local directors from Albania’s 12 counties.
Lamallari called for a more proactive approach to wildfires. He said police should investigate every suspicious fire after firefighters put it out. The investigations should identify the cause and any possible criminal responsibility. Police will work with firefighters, Civil Emergencies, local communities, forensic experts and prosecutors.
Lamallari also stressed the scale of the damage caused by this year’s fires. He questioned how many years and generations the country’s forests would need to recover.
Meanwhile, State Police General Director Skënder Hita called for greater commitment to public, road and maritime safety. He urged local police leaders to respond quickly to prevent incidents and address citizens’ concerns professionally.
Hita also stressed the importance of police conduct and communication. He said citizens should have access to the police, receive timely responses and see professionalism in every situation.
