Rama: Violence Cannot Force My Resignation; I Will Defend Albania’s Future

Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Sunday that citizens had every right to demand his resignation and protest against the government, but no one could force him from office through violence. He made the remarks while presenting a new legislative package against urban violence.

Rama defended the package, saying it respected citizens’ freedoms and rights. He stressed that individual freedoms must not infringe on the rights of others. Anyone who opposes the government can voice their views, campaign for change and protest without pressure, he said.

The prime minister also invited critics to meet him face-to-face and present their demands. He said he would listen to their concerns, even if he disagreed with their call for his resignation. However, he vowed to protect the country and its citizens from attempts to reverse Albania’s progress. He also warned that authorities would hold anyone who attacks property or threatens public safety accountable.

Rama accused the organisers of recent unrest of inciting, paying and coordinating violent protesters to derail the country’s progress. He insisted that those who damage buildings, set fires and disrupt central Tirana do not represent the Albanian people, including citizens who oppose his government but reject violence.

Rama also pledged to outline new measures in the 2027 draft budget. He said the government would present concrete decisions to distribute the benefits of economic growth more fairly. He promised to share the details after the cabinet reviews the draft early next week.

The prime minister urged Albanians to remain patient and determined. He described the unrest as a last-ditch attempt to undermine the country just as it approaches its goal of joining the European Union.

“Noise levels are high, but their chances are zero,” Rama said. He reaffirmed his commitment to Albania’s European future and pledged not to betray the trust of citizens who want a stronger country and a place for Albania alongside other EU member states.
