Salla: Stronger international cooperation in fisheries management

Agriculture Minister Andis Salla said the agreement on implementing the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea is an important international instrument. It targets the management of transboundary and highly migratory fish stocks.

He spoke in Parliament. He said the agreement promotes conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.

Salla warned about growing pressure on marine ecosystems. He cited overfishing and habitat degradation. He said the agreement strengthens international cooperation. It supports science-based and precautionary fisheries management.

He noted the document was adopted in 1995 and entered into force in 2001. It strengthens the international framework for managing fish stocks that move beyond national borders. It relies on cooperation among states and regional fisheries organizations.

Salla said the agreement has multiple benefits. It reinforces respect for international law. It supports sustainable fisheries management. It improves alignment with international commitments.

He said the act creates no new financial obligations. It adds no administrative burden. It formalizes existing commitments. He added that it supports EU integration by aligning with EU fisheries standards.
