Hilë Mosi, Shkodër-born poet serving the national cause

TIRANA, April 22 – Hilë Mosi, poet, publicist and politician, was born in Shkodër on 22 April 1885. He became known for his publicist and political activity in support of the Albanian national cause.

Mosi completed his early education in Shkodër in a strong cultural and patriotic environment shaped by the National Renaissance. He pursued higher studies in Klagenfurt, Austria (1904–1908), in teacher training. After returning, he founded the association “Gegnija” in Shkodër (1908), through which he became a delegate to the Congress of Manastir, contributing to the standardisation of the Albanian alphabet. He also took part in independence uprisings between 1909 and 1912.

Mosi led the publications “Shqipëtari” (The Albanian) in Istanbul (1909–1910) and “Agimi” (Dawn) in Shkodër (1919). He later served as Minister of Education, contributing to the development of the education system. He also served as Minister of Public Works, focusing on infrastructure modernisation, and as Albania’s delegate to the League of Nations, where he defended the interests of the newly formed state.

Mosi contributed to Albanian literature with poetry collections including “Zani i atdheut” (The Voice of the Homeland), 1913 and “Lotët e dashtunisë” (Tears of Love), 1915. He used the pseudonyms “Zog Sokoli” and “Liriasi” in his literary work. He passed away on 22 February 1933.
