Edi Rama says Albania has a long tradition of hospitality

Edi Rama said Albania has a strong tradition of hospitality during a discussion with Alexis Papahelas at the Delphi Economic Forum.

Rama explained that Albania has historically protected people in danger. He mentioned that during World War II, Albania sheltered Jews and did not hand them over to the Nazis. He also said Albania protected thousands of Italian soldiers after Italy’s capitulation. In addition, he recalled that Albania opened its doors to Afghan refugees after the fall of Kabul.

Moreover, Rama said Albania accepted Iranian Mujahideen on humanitarian grounds. He explained that the group was at risk in Iraq and faced repeated attacks. Therefore, he said Albania agreed to host them to save lives, not for political purposes.

Finally, Rama said Albania has always responded to humanitarian requests when lives are in danger. He added that these decisions reflect the country’s tradition of protecting people in need.
