Former Constitutional Court chief Rustem Gjata passes away

Rustem Gjata, former head of the Constitutional Court, has died. His son, lawyer Çlirim Gjata, shared the news on social media.

Rustem Gjata won a seat as a Democratic Party MP in the first pluralist elections in 1992. He helped draft the law on the Constitutional Court as a member of the Legal Affairs Commission.

Later, the Democratic Party proposed him as head of the Constitutional Court. He served from 1992 to 1995, when the mandate lasted three years. He became the first head of the Constitutional Court after the fall of communism.

He served a second term until 1998. Parliament dismissed him that year.
