Aleksandër Lalo, Albanian composer of iconic film scores

TIRANA, April 28 – Albanian composer Aleksandër Lalo (1949–2017), born on 27 April 1949, remains a key figure in the country’s film music tradition. He would have turned 77 years old. His work shaped Albanian cinema across several decades.

He developed a distinctive musical language that combined emotional depth with national motifs. His compositions defined the sound of numerous Albanian films and became part of the country’s cultural memory.

Lalo worked primarily in film music and introduced a recognisable stylistic approach that influenced later composers. His scores remain widely associated with Albanian cinema of the late 20th century.

His filmography includes “Tomka and His Friends” (1977), “The Last Winter” (1976), “The Bride” (1980), “Two Times Checkmate” (1986), “The Train Leaves at Five to Seven” (1988), and “The Historian and the Chameleons” (1989), among others.

His work continues to be referenced in Albanian cultural production and remains part of the country’s contemporary artistic heritage.
