TIRANA, April 29 – Albania and Italy agreed to jointly produce military vessels, initially for the Albanian Armed Forces and later for export markets.
Albanian company Kayo will carry out production in cooperation with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri S.p.A. The agreement was signed in Tirana by Kayo chief Ardi Veliu and Fincantieri Chief Executive Officer Pierroberto Folgiero.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, Defence Minister Ermal Nufi, Italian Ambassador Marco Alberti, and representatives of the Italian company attended the ceremony. The project will be implemented at the Vlora Bay naval base in Albania.
Fincantieri Chief Executive Officer Pierroberto Folgiero said the agreement transforms a general framework into a concrete industrial initiative. He added that the process moved successfully from a formal agreement to an operational project.
At the same time, he said the initiative carries strong strategic and industrial ambition. He stressed that the project focuses on creating a productive model that serves both defence needs and long-term industrial development.
The Fincantieri CEO said the company aims to bring an Italian industrial vision into Albania. He added that the programme will support production for the Albanian Armed Forces and serve as a platform for wider industrialisation in Europe, with export potential as a key objective.
In addition, he said the project introduces a new approach to shipbuilding. He stated that it will strengthen competitiveness in the European market through a modern and scalable production model.
