Bank of Albania supports green economy financing through new EU-aligned framework

Bank of Albania, in cooperation with the European Investment Bank, held a technical and inter-institutional workshop in Tirana on the development of Albania’s “Green Taxonomy”. This system classifies which economic activities can be considered environmentally sustainable.

The Bank said the initiative is part of a broader technical assistance program to green financial systems. It also said the project represents an important step toward building a framework that directs investments into sustainable development.

The Green Taxonomy aims to increase transparency in financial markets. It also seeks to guide capital toward green activities and strengthen long-term financial stability.

The workshop brought together representatives from public institutions, international organizations, the banking sector, businesses, and environmental groups. Participants discussed the first draft of the taxonomy and provided technical feedback.

Bank of Albania Deputy Governor Natasha Ahmetaj stressed the importance of aligning Albania with EU environmental and financial standards. She said the taxonomy will help shape climate-related financial policies and support EU integration goals.

Finally, institutions said the process will continue with further consultations. They aim to finalize the document and formalize cooperation through a memorandum of understanding for future implementation.
