Kosovo commemorates April 27 as the Day of Missing Persons from the war. The country holds various activities and symbolic visits. Institutions, organizations, and families take part.
The day highlights the ongoing need for justice. It also stresses the importance of finding the truth. Families continue to seek answers about their loved ones.
Twenty-seven years after the war, the fate of around 1,600 people remains unknown. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reports 1,581 missing persons. These cases remain unresolved from a total of 6,063 reported during the conflict.
A large mural is unveiled in honor of Ferdonije Qerkezi, a mother from Gjakova who has become a symbol of remembrance. Artist Ermira Murati creates the work. It shows the mother sitting alone at a table with six empty plates.
The mural reflects the tragedy of her loss. Serbian police took her husband and sons 27 years ago. The artist says the work honors all families still living with pain and absence.
