Opposition protest in Tirana sees escalation on main boulevard after speech

TIRANA, April 17 – A protest held by Albania’s Democratic Party took place on the main boulevard “Dëshmorët e Kombit” in central Tirana on Friday, later continuing with tensions near key state institutions.

After opposition leader Sali Berisha addressed the gathering, some participants threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks in the direction of the government building. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons to manage the situation and disperse parts of the crowd. Security forces established cordons around sensitive institutional areas.

Groups of protesters later moved towards the parliamentary area, where police restricted access at several central intersections. Authorities reported detentions related to the use of pyrotechnic devices and Molotov cocktails. Water cannons were also used after attempts to breach security barriers.

Several participants required medical assistance following exposure to tear gas. Police and protesters had brief confrontations during attempts by parts of the crowd to move beyond restricted zones. The demonstration later dispersed, while opposition representatives concluded the national protest calling for government resignation and early elections.
