TIRANA, April 27 – Kosova moved closer to early parliamentary elections after political parties failed to agree on a new president.
Meanwhile, the ruling Vetevendosje [Self-Determination] Movement and the main opposition Democratic Party of Kosova and Democratic League of Kosova kept deep divisions over the process. Prime Minister Albin Kurti proposed that opposition parties jointly nominate three non-partisan candidates.
Vetevendosje [Self-Determination] said it would withdraw its own candidates if the opposition submitted agreed names. However, opposition leaders rejected the proposal and described it as politically unconvincing and restrictive in timing.
Earlier, Kurti offered institutional posts to opposition parties, including deputy prime minister, ministerial positions and the post of speaker of parliament. Both the Democratic Party of Kosova aand the Democratic League of Kosova rejected the offers.
In addition, political analyst Donika Emini told Radio Free Europe that the proposal functioned as a tactical move rather than a real compromise. She said the timing limited coordination and increased pressure on the opposition.
Under the constitution, Kosova must elect a new president by April 28. If lawmakers fail to reach agreement, the country will hold early elections within 45 days.
